Hoping to download Premiere Pro but you have no idea where to start? Well don't worry, this nifty guide will tell you everything you need to know about how to download Premiere Pro for free (as a trial) or sign up for a Creative Cloud subscription. We'll even talk you through how to subscribe to Premiere Pro alone, or as part of an Adobe creative package that'll come with a number of Adobe apps.

Whatever subscription best suits you, we will talk you through the process. The fun doesn't stop there though, in fact, we have included a load of useful tips and tricks that'll help you get the most out of your software and improve your Premiere Pro game.

If you would rather use another editing programme, then make sure you check out our guide to the best video editing software for designers. Or if you'd rather update your editing gear before you dive into Premiere Pro, then have a look at our roundup of the best laptops for video editing and the best headphones for video editing. Make sure you also check our guide to the best cloud storage or best external hard drives.

Can I download Premiere Pro for free?

That's right, you can download Premiere Pro for free as a seven-day trial that will help you decide whether it's the right video editing software for you. The software is normally full-price but if you head straight to Adobe, you can get a week-long trial of the full software, including all the latest features and updates. You don't even have to give any credit card details to download the free trial.

We would like to point out that downloading Premiere Pro (or any of the other Adobe software) from another source is illegal, and we do not recommend it. Not only is it piracy, but downloading from an unreliable source may invite a number of viruses and malware onto your device.

Download Premiere Pro as part of Creative Cloud

If you'd like to download Premiere Pro as part of the Creative Cloud, then you will need to head to the Adobe site and select one of the subscription options. You can either choose to download and subscribe to Premiere Pro alone, or you can choose a plan that includes Adobe's entire range of Adobe's creative apps, from Photoshop to Acrobat.

As a standalone app Premiere Pro currently costs $20.99 / £19.97, but you can also add additional apps, such as the audio recording, mixing and restoration app Audition, for an additional fee. Buying single apps may start adding up in cost, and if you're likely to use more than one of Adobe's apps, it usually makes sense to get all 20+ apps in the Creative Cloud suite with an All-Apps subscription for US$52.99 / £49.94 per month. That includes Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Premier Pro and more).

There are options for individual users and businesses, and if you're a student or teacher you save up to 65 per cent on your first year of use if you buy Premiere Pro as part of the full suite. Make sure you keep an eye on our best Adobe deals page to see any special offers as and when they appear.

Right now, the cheapest way to buy Premiere Pro is as a standalone app, which costs $20.99 / £19.97 / €23.99 per month. This will be taken as a monthly payment for a year, and it includes access to the latest features and updates the moment they're released. Also included is 100GB of cloud storage, Premiere Rush, Adobe Portfolio, Adobe Fonts and Adobe Spark (where you can quickly create your own branded graphics, web pages and videos).

Alternatively, you can pay for the year upfront at a cost of $240 / £238 / €287; or on a month-by-month fee of $31.49 / £30.34 / €35.99, including the previously detailed additions.

Then there's the Creative Cloud All Apps option, which gives you access to Adobe's entire collection of creative desktop and mobile apps – including of course Premiere Pro – for $52.99 / £49.94 / €59.99 per month. This is a great deal if you'll use more than one app. Be sure to keep an eye on Adobe's Special Offers page for any discounts or bundle deals on apps from the Creative Cloud suite.

Premiere Pro discount for students and teachers

If you're a student or teacher, you can download Premiere Pro as part of a discounted All Apps plan at a much lower rate than the usual option for individual users. You'll get Adobe's entire collection of creative desktop and mobile apps, plus 100GB cloud storage, Adobe Portfolio and more – for just $19.99 / £16.24 / €19.50 per month for the first year, $29.99 / £25.28 / €29.99 after that. It's a great saving, whether you're picking the monthly payment for a year, or the month-by-month option.

Can you download Adobe Premiere Pro on Windows?

Yes, you can download Adobe Premiere Pro for Windows and for Mac with the same subscription, whether that's the standalone individual subscription or an All Apps subscription. Unlike some Adobe apps, like Photoshop, Illustrator, Fresco, there's no iPad version yet.

There's no need to specify which platform you want to use the software with when you subscribe since your subscription allows you to download Premiere Pro to all of the devices you want.

Getting started in Premiere Pro

Once you've downloaded the version of Premiere Pro that suits you, there are several tutorials on best practice in video editing around the internet – if you want some key tips, head over to our article on how to edit videos.

Of course, if you want something a little easier to navigate for mobile, you can always explore Adobe's free mobile app Premiere Rush (voted top in our best video editing apps round up).
